Why clarity fades fast...

I’ve never met a leadership team who didn't have a brilliant plan on paper. The problem isn’t the strategy. It’s Tuesday morning at 8:15 AM.

In my recent conversations with schools, I’ve noticed a frustratingly common pattern. I call it Post-Strategy Drift.


It’s that moment, usually about three weeks into term, where the high-level intent starts to get swallowed by the 'urgent'. It’s not that the team has lost commitment. It’s just that the gravity of school life starts pulling everyone back toward old behaviours.


What I’ve realised is that clarity has a half-life. If you don’t actively protect it, it fades...


I’ve watched it happen. It starts with a slight dilution of the message. One leader describes a priority one way, another puts a different spin on it. Suddenly, the shared vision starts to fray.


In the schools I’m partnering with, we’re focusing on three specific shifts to stop the drift:


1) Systems Over Willpower: We stop asking people to 'remember' the plan. We build organisational routines that make the strategic choice the easiest one to make.


2) The Shared Vocabulary: We move away from vague mission statements and create a specific language for decision making that actually works in a busy school.


3) The Hallway Factor: True alignment isn’t built in the leadership office. It’s built in the two-minute conversations between lessons. Structure is what sustains those moments.


The reality? Most strategic documents end up as expensive wallpaper. They just don't survive the jump from the page into daily practice.
